"To Dance Is Human"

A fundraiser in support the efforts made by BC Professional Firefighters' Burn Fund to help burn survivors and promote fire safety.

The purpose is to deliver a message that dance is accessible to all individuals, not solely to trained professionals. By bringing together amateur as well as professional dancers and musicians, we are hoping that this event will inspire everyone to have the desire to dance.

The event itself will consist of various dance performances (latin funk,
jazz, and ballroom), music performances (vocal and piano), interactive
dance and mini workshops as well as general dancing. I have attached the
poster of the event to this email and the link to our website below:

(Six Sundays)

7-8 p.m.

Meditation Sundays

This workshop will be given over several sessions to allow the practice time to soak in and penetrate the unconscious mind. We will begin by learn how to sit. Sounds simple. It is simple. But unfortunately we make it challenging. We will discover the Path of Mindfulness and learn some of the basic tools to help build increasing awareness into our daily life. Many of the obstacles that we all face in developing a mindful life will be discussed. These have been noticed by meditators for thousands of years. We will discover that our struggle with maintaining awareness is not unique. We will also be pointed in the direction of insight, also known in the Buddhist tradition as vipassana, a broad knowing or recognition of what is really going on in our life.

These will be held from 7-8pm. If you have never meditated before or haven't been able to get into a regular routine, so that your meditation practice is a habit, you may want to come along. We will go for 6 consecutive Sundays however we will skip the long weekend Sunday, July 2nd. Here is what we plan to cover in the six sessions
June 18th     -       Introduction to Meditation: why do it and how do we do it?
Focus will be on listening and following the breath
June 25th     -       Meditation on allowing: learning to A.W.A.K.E.N.
July 9th        -       Meditation on sensations: scanning the body and paying attention
July 16th      -       Meditation on emotions: scanning the heart and paying attention

July 30th      -       Metta meditation: developing and distributing friendliness

Come explore the key Ashtanga concept of vinyasa through the awareness of "breath, roots, and core". "Breath" leads us to understanding prana, life force and consciousness. "Roots" is the intention of seeking the origin of every action. "Core" is the essence, the heart, the intention, the center from which you work in your practice. Using the structure of the Ashtanga method, through the study of vinyasa, philosophy and these concepts of breath, roots and core, we will explore how to find our own individual expression of this profound and traditional approach. This workshop is open to Ashtanga students as well as other students with a consistent background in "flow" based practices.

Oct. 19-21, 2006

Whistler, BC

Gioia Irwin has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and has been teaching for 19 years. She has had extensive training and was certified in the Iyengar tradition. In more recent years she has been deeply inspired by Orit Sen-Gupta and Dona Holleman, whose teachings are based on seven vital principles: relaxed body, quiet mind, intent, rooting, connecting, breathing and expanding (elongation & widening). Understanding and applying these principles in our yoga practice and daily lives is the central focus of Gioia’s teaching.
Influenced by the work of Thomas Meyers (Anatomy Trains), Gioia explores core lines of anatomy and aspects of tensegrity that deepen connection and awareness in the body.

with Eoin Finn

Great for teachers and students of all levels of yoga, the Positive Force Yoga System is a clear, logical and fun system for understanding and teaching the correct alignment of yoga asanas.
In this course, we will learn how to bring our physical structure into balance and align the joints by following the Positive Force Principles, so that eventually we feel more lightness and grace in our yoga practice. The method is to learn basic anatomical reference points. We can then line these points in the body to create patterns that we will use as building blocks for all yoga poses, from the most complex to basic, suddenly making yoga poses easier to understand.
And if the student can maintain the alignment of the Positive Force reference points and not “go around” them in order to go deeper into the pose, then the yoga experience will become safer, more therapeutic, more fun and will facilitate better ‘energy flow’ and bliss.
